Task 3: Final Project, Design Exploration and Application

INSTRUCTIONS

- Task 3: Explore and Apply Types

In Task 3, I will create my own project. I create typefaces, designing and exploring typefaces for my area of interest. The final result will be used for my typefaces and other materials such as prints, posters, and animations using them.

Proposal

- I came up with 4 ideas for the project based on my interests. My interests were 'movies', 'songs', 'food' and 'art works'. I chose the third idea among them, 'food'. The reason is that once I got the feedback, I chose the 'Food' idea because Mr. Vinod gave me a lot of inspiration regarding food ideas, although all three ideas aren't bad.

Sketches

- I was thinking about which one to choose for my topic 'food', and I saw the donuts I was eating. That was 'Dunkin Donuts'. I saw the logo on the box of Dunkin' Donuts. Something about this logo seemed too simplistic and didn't work well for Dunkin' Donuts. So I decided to adopt this as my idea.

- In the first sketch, I wanted to express this in a circle like a donut, and express it as if something reminiscent of a donut.

- Then, I thought it would be nice to put a decoration pattern on the donuts in this typeface.

Digitalized sketches

- I first digitized the sketches I drew in illustrator. This is a very time consuming operation. I had to make our observations more detailed, and we had to move to digitization.

- This is my first digitalization. When I get feedback on this, it's a very consistent and decent typeface, but the 'S' and '?' He said that the font  looks very different. So I thought I should fix this some more.

- This is the second digitization I fixed. Observing the 'S' obsessively, I made it look more rounded. and '?' The typeface was a little difficult for me to create. But I made it more consistent than the digitized typeface just before.

- Then, in the feedback I received, after completing the B&W of this typeface, it would be good to complete the typeface with donuts pattern decorations in a different typeface.

Research

- I searched several images to find the pattern of donuts.

Pink

- I first applied decorations to the letters of 'Dunkin'. The feedback I received about the first normal typeface was, try using it by adding contrast, shadows, and lines to it. Because this looks too plain, and the lines on the outside are not well expressed.

- I spent a lot of time illustrating all the typefaces. This was really hard and arduous work. But it took a lot of effort, and I was satisfied with it.

Application

- I chose social media and posters in the application. Because when I got feedback, it was recommended. Mr. Vinod gave me a lot of ideas.

- This is the first application I made. However, Mr. Vinod recommended that I try various effects such as contrast and lines because this typeface is too plain and simple.

Feedback

Week 10:

When I first started, I worried a lot. Choosing a topic was a very difficult task for me. But eventually I found my subject and started doing a lot of research and sketching on it.

Week 11:

When I got feedback on my first sketch, my typeface was consistent and appropriate, but the 'S' and '?' did not match, and I received various packaging and design examples. After this I decided exactly what I was going to use.

Week 12:

Having finished all the B&W typefaces, I worked in illustrator for the next typeface. This was a very time consuming and very difficult task. But it was a very interesting task, like discovering something new.

Week 13:

I started designing graphic for my application. This was a very interesting and fun job because I did it like I was promoting it myself. I selected three applications, and completed social media, posters and packaging suitable for donuts.

Reflection

Experience:

- I learned and experienced a lot more about typefaces because of this project. It was very interesting to design what I like and use it to make typefaces. I think this project will give me a better idea of how to work with typefaces in the future. However, it was also a very difficult task. Because it has to be observed and produced in detail, it was necessary to put a lot of effort into completing it one by one. However, it was more of a project that gained that much.

Observations:

- Through this work, I was able to learn in more various details such as observation of the typeface and the uniformity of the models. About how to use a typeface to make it look more equable.

Findings:

- Creating a typeface is actually too difficult a task. You need to make the rules of the array equal. Round typefaces usually use Illustrator, which also takes a lot of time and effort. These have allowed me to do more detailed work, and I think I am quite pleased with the results.
