Lectures 4: Harmony / Unity
- Harmony
Harmony involves a selection of elements that share a common trait. Harmony becomes monotony without variety.
Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together (same theme, aesthetic style or mood).
Harmony can be seen when the overall composition looks similar and there's nothing obviously that jumps out.
-Unity
Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout design to pull the look together.
It occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme. Although unity and harmony may sound similar, they each play distinct roles in the way we experience design.
- Scale and Proportion
Scale and proportion are both design elements that have to do with size, Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design or artwork.
Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object, Throughout the centuries, designers have used scale and proportion to depict or distract from the ideal.
- Scale: Scale refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure.
- Proportion: Proportion in art and design is the relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compare to one another with respect to size, color, quantity, degree, setting, etc.; i.e. ratio.
Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity.
The effective use of proportion in design often results in harmony and unity.
Lectures 5: Symbol / Word and Image
- Symbol
A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else.
In design, symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story.
- Pictorial Symbols: A representation or illustration of an object or other information about an object or activity through a picture or pictogram is called a pictogram or pictogram. Figures help you understand data visually.
- Abstract Symbols: Symbols are abstract, not concrete or tangible. A symbol represents something, but not the actual object itself. For example, some holidays have certain symbols attached to them.
- Arbitrary Symbols: Arbitrary symbols have no resemblance at all to the
objects or the ideas they represent. The symbol is invented with the meaning constructed.
Many are based on geometric shapes and colors.
- Word and Image
Imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital. Users and viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. It is therefore important to use suitable and relevant images when designing.
Choosing the right words to pair with the imagery is of high importance as it would deepen the meaning of the design. Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.
Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or concept.
Instruction
Task 1: Harmony
Visual Research: At first, I was very worried about what to use as my topic. As a result of pondering over and over, I came across a poster about 'environmental protection' while looking for various images. This is where I got inspiration for what to put my ideas into. My topic should be "Environmental Protection" include "Mountain". When I thought of unity, the scenery kept coming to mind, I thought of combining unity and scenery to come up with an idea, and I did a lot of searches.
These pictures of my research:
Sketches of Harmony
- This sketch popped out of my head at once without knowing why. What I had in mind was to express the sun shining down and the mountains that were destroyed by it. When I digitized this sketch, I tried to use similar colors to match the harmony. Mountains are usually green, blue, and turquoise, but I thought of red-based colors similar to the color of the sun. Perhaps my image research helped a lot.
- This was my first digital sketch, and I didn't like it a bit. Because it came out so different from what I thought.
- But first I tried coloring it. When using a red-based color, maybe cyan or green wouldn't go well with it? I thought about it, but I guess it was too much.
- Finally, this is what I corrected and revised using self-feedback. Again, the more feedback I accept, the better results will be here. I really liked this exercise. It seemed to clearly express what I wanted to express.
Final Outcome: Harmony
Task 2: Symbol
Visual Research: My topic should be "Environmental Protection" include "Antarctica" When you think of conservation, what usually comes to mind? I immediately think of 'iceberg' and 'tropics'. Perhaps because I grew up watching a lot of environmental protection posters in Antarctica, the first thing that came to mind in my mind was a penguin climbing on an iceberg that was about to break.
Sketches of Symbol
- When I first thought of penguins and Antarctica, several ideas came to mind. I sketched those ideas once. The result that came out was this. Obviously, after experimenting with various things, it seems that a lot of good ideas have come out.
- Of these ideas, I liked the last one and the one before. The reason is that 'Symbol' and the theme seem to fit the best. The first sketch wanted to express that the iceberg and penguin merged and there was no place for penguins to live anymore. For the second sketch, I wanted to express the iceberg breaking under the big penguin symbol.
After much deliberation, I finally decided to use the second sketch. The reason is because I thought the second sketch was an idea suitable for 'symbol'.
- This is the first digital sketch I made. Since the iceberg looks way too steep than I thought, maybe I should fix this. And since B&W looks so plain, I decided to use black as the background, and the penguin symbol in blue, which is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of penguins. And I will make tears welling up in the penguin's eyes so that you can see the penguin's sorrow.
- Digitizing this idea with Photoshop was very interesting. Since this symbol was a simple task, it took less time than the first 'Harmony' practice, but that's why I was able to focus on it even more. It was really fun and interesting work to create something like a logo using the pen tool.
- So, I got a very satisfactory result. It's a penguin symbol. His wings were painted with color to lessen the ordinary, and the iceberg below was filled with shallow colors to represent the gradually rising water and ice melting.
Final Outcome: Symbol

Feedback:
Week 5:
General Feedback - What I'm learning now seems to be that unity is really important. No matter how many ideas and good pictures, if there is no unity, it just seems messy.
Specific Feedback -
Reflection:
Experience - It was very exciting to do this exercise, I learned a lot about the design principal, the different meanings, words and when to use these designs. And it was very nice to be able to freely use the ideas I wanted in my practice sessions.
Observations - In this section, I learned about 'Harmony, Unity, Symbols, Word and Image'. These were very useful information and teachings for me when designing. Of course, I still don't understand all design principals, but if the day comes when I learn more about it and understand it, it will help me a lot in my design life.
Findings - As I took this class, I realized that it is important for the elements of design. How to use these elements, and when to merge them to make them better, all of these combined to create a more balanced design. It was a really good experience and learning.
something is wrong with these versions of your work. We need to have a discussion
