INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise 1: Quantify and Visualize data

- The first task of information design is to quantify the selection and arrange the objects in a displayable layout or chart.

- In this exercise, I selected several colored 'candies' and grouped them on an A4 sheet of paper. The number, color, size, and brand of candies are divided so that they can be divided into layouts.

- But I thought something was missing. So I decided to try the layout again.

- This is the final piece that came out of that. I draw a large logo in the middle and use arrows to explain the rest. And the color and number were written on the bottom of the candy. I used different colored pens to decorate this.

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H

- LATCH system created by Richard Saul Wurman.

The 5 elements to organize information are as follows:

Location / Alphabet / Time / Category / Hierarchy

Location: Compare information coming from various sources and use the location element to organize information that is best represented visually in different parts. For example, could we organize books by origin of location? What about representing sales data by location?

Alphabet: Organizing information alphabetically works really well when people know specific terms and topics they are looking for. This element does well when organizing large quantities of information, such as specialized glossaries or the online resources. Wurman suggests that alphabetizing information is also effective when an audience might not understand any other classification system. This method is used  for very large bodies of information, it is not always the best organization method as it forced organization rather than natural.

Time: Chronological formatting becomes essential if a schedule of yearly events or  a complex process that occurs over time, like a project management process. Time is also good for showing how things happen over a fixed duration of time. This method is used for events that occur over a fixed duration. Easy to understand, easy to draw comparisons and conclusions.

Category: Use the category approach when the information is similar in importance and the categories are intuitive or easy to understand. You can use categories to organize information in just about any way imaginable, whether it be by color, shape, gender, model, price, or anything else. This is a good way to organize information about human resource processes.

Hierarchy: Hierarchies are useful when showing how one piece of information is connected to another in order of importance or rank. Exhibiting scale can also be considered, smallest to largest, feasible to non-feasible, easy to difficult and many more.

Re-designing an infographic:

- Our next task is to find a poorly designed infographic and re-design it using a free online infographic tool.

Issues:
- too many letters
- repeating layout
- too many information
- not matched typography
- old school images

Short Infographic Sketch:

- The infographic site I used is Canva. I used the elements with only the layout of this site as they were, and recreated other elements such as images and logos. As with the example used for bad infographics, adding too many text and images will make it look very complicated. So I summarized the letters as much as possible, and only used the ones I thought were really important images.

- Naturally, I made the title to be the largest word, and then made the subtitles a little smaller. And since using too many colors is messy, I made it look simple using only white and light yellow. Through this, I changed the background color to dark brown, thinking that a slightly brownish background would look better than a black background.

Review of the Canva:

- It is very simple and convenient to use. It is very good to search and use various layouts and effects. However, the operation is a bit inconvenient, I have to click to zoom in and out, and the way to turn the pages is a little inconvenient. I have to pick and use them one by one.

- It finds png images that I want to use very well. No need to go to Google or Pinterest to find images. So we are free to use and insert many logos or example photos.

- There are many options such as templates and layouts, but it is very difficult for me to modify them in a little more detail. There are many fonts, images, and colors, but it was difficult to go a little deeper and change them in detail.
