Lecture

Week 5:

Poster Design Development

In this class, I was briefed about the second project of making posters. In this lesson, you will learn what poster design is and how to design a poster using photos and typography.

A poster is a medium that can be shown to target customers to raise awareness of brands, advertisements, movies, and dramas. PSA posters are specially used posters to raise people's awareness of certain social issues.

Posters, created using people's imagination, can convey a message in the most effective way because they are so striking and imaginative.

1. Title

The title should complement the visuals in the poster, as it is essentially the caption of the graphic elements. It should not exceed two lines of text.

2. Graphic

Same as title, the graphic should also complement the texts in the poster. It should be exported in a high resolution (300 dpi or higher).

3. Text

The text should describe the intended message of the poster clearly. There are no limits to how long the text should be but it should not be too overloaded.

4. White space

White space provides the poster some room to "breathe". A sufficient use of it can avoid audience being overwhelmed with the information presented in the poster.

Week 6:

Poster Design Execution

1. Research about our topic

Reflect on the topic through our own experience as well as others'. Study and gather information about the topic and write a summary.

Highlight the key points of the summary, define the title, slogan, details and call for action.

2. Define our concept

Create a section for each contents in the poster (title, slogan, details, call for action).

Sketch a mock up poster. Decide on an idea and approach. Think about how emotions are evoked and how a strong impression can be created.

- Creating a brutal shock value

- Provocative by making the graphic upsetting

- Sensitive by being heart warming

- Artistic by being subtle in the delivery of the message

Week 5: Digital imaging

Digital imaging: My reflection

- We need to use the same method we learned in that tutorial and insert ourselves digitally into a given image of Hearst Mansion. The full body picture should be taken with the right light to match the environment in the Hearst Mansion picture.

First, I need to take a full body picture of myself so that I can insert it into the image using the Photoshop Pen Tool. I was in self-quarantine at this time, so it was very difficult to take a full body picture.

Then, I found a picture of the full-body model who came to try various things, and cut it using the pen tool like this one, and made it look exactly like mine.

I add an overlay color to make the subject look blended into the background. Then add a new layer and use the brush tool to create a shadow behind it.

After creating the shadow, I use the Polygonal Lasso tool to select the parts I want to use and use the Mask to remove specific parts.

Project 2B

Week (20/9/2021): PSA Poster Topic Research

- For some reason, I had a very bad mentality during the Covid 19 crisis. The case is, In my hometown, Korea, the government failed to catch the corona in the beginning, making it the country with the most corona infected people.

- Almost everyone has been physically inactive for two years, which has a really negative impact on their health, both physically and mentally. Physically, our eating habits have changed, we can't go out to exercise, so we sleep more, and if we eat a lot without moving, of course, our body's health is more adversely affected. With boredom and stress, there isn't much to do other than eat, sleep, again eat and sleep.

- Likewise, I also learned how to be active at home because of Covid 19. In some ways, there were good situations, but in other ways, there were also very bad situations. This situation has given my family, who has been living a hard life as it is now, and for me, who has been struggling with studying, to take enough rest. Another bad situation is that because of this incident, my body is getting worse and worse because I do not move and exercise because of this incident, and I do not meet people, so my mental situation continues to be very bad.

- In this situation, I need sufficient healing and care for my body and mind. I didn't use my body a lot while I was at home, so if I try some simple stretching or yoga, I'll be able to get my body in this situation back. I tend to bite my nails when my mental state is broken. A lot of effort has been made to fix this, but without success. But if I pay more attention to this, I think I can probably fix it.

Visual Research On Poster Designed With Photography And Text:

- I searched various posters that fit my topic. There were a lot of really interesting and eye-catching posters out there, and I picked three of them.

- My first poster is a yellowish poster. It is as if the shadow of a person is expressed like a staircase, and whether it is going up or going down seems to be different depending on the viewer's point of view. It was a poster that raised the question of whether he was going to give up on life in a difficult life, or whether he would stand up and climb again.

- The next poster is a poster of a person sitting leaning against a wall, which seems to mean mental health with more thoughts. Only the person in question knows whether the door he is leaning on is a place he can really lean on to rest, or if he just sits down because he doesn't want to go out. His face expressed here and his countless thoughts express his feelings well.

- The last poster is a poster with a person biting his nails. The reason people usually bite their nails is a sign that they are under a lot of stress. This can turn into a habit, indiscriminately biting your nails during stressful times. But this is very bad for health, and this poster is telling such people to stop.

Week 7 (4/10/2021): PSA poster planning and digital drafts

- This week we started the process of shaping the idea for the PSA poster, and we plan to implement it. A template is provided to work as a starting point for the PSA poster. Posters must be A4 size in portrait orientation.

- We started by creating a mood board from week 7 to week 8 through the digital poster draft. My theme is 'biting nails due to broken mentality'. And I also tend to bite my nails when I'm stressed, so I think I'll come up with an idea based on this. This idea came from the Mr. Martin thinking with me in class. So I think I'll make a poster in a slightly darker way.

Theme: MENTAL HEALTH

Stay positive during this pandemic

1. Research about your topic

- Study and gather all related information about your topic.
- Write a summary about your topic
- Highlight the key points of your summary
- Define the Title
- Define the Slogan
- Define the Details
- Define the Call For Action

Template PDF File Below:

Process:

- I tried to make a poster using my photos. This will be a work where I can practice and use both my photography and typography skills at once.

Photographs:

- I wanted to take a picture of myself biting my nails when I'm stressed. And I wanted to fill the entire poster with my figure, so I took a picture so that I could fit the entire screen.

Photographs PDF file:

- My photographs collections that I took, I thought a lot about which one to choose among these many good photos. I chose the picture of me biting my nails while looking into the distance. I will select the center composition of this and set it to fit the A4 size of the poster.

Digital Design:

- This is the poster I made based on my first draft. I wanted to make a monotonous but powerful poster using black and white photos and only intense red. But when I got feedback in class, it was evaluated that it was a little loose and the typography didn't fit my poster. So I changed the composition and the typography, and I heard feedback that maybe it would be better to use a mask as an actual mask. I will accept that and fix this.

Let's start again.

- I again cropped my photo using the pen tool, scaled it to fit the poster and compose it. The empty space will be filled with typography.

- Then, I found the mask image, cropped it again using the Pen tool, and freely adjusted it to fit my face. A little awkward part was erased using an eraser, and color correction and b&w effect were added to match the color.

- And using a soft, dripping brush, I drew the feeling of blood dripping on the mask and hands. This took a lot of time, and I made detailed adjustments one by one to draw a little more detail. Adjusted opacity and saturation.

- Then, I first laid out the layout for the typography. The title is the largest on the left side, then the slogan and details are laid out in a gray opaque box.

- To make the title stand out, I put black text on a white background, and red text on the rest. And the reason why I put a gray box is to make the red details more visible.

- The font I used for this poster is 'BemboSTD'. I decided to use this font because it seems like a simple but important and dangerous typography.

- For slogan and detail, I put shadow under the typography to make it more fit, but I didn't put it in the details to make it a match.

Final Digital Poster Design:

- When I first came up with the idea for this poster, I first merged my research and my thoughts. However, I couldn't think of the topic of my 'habit'. While I was discussing my topic with Mr. Martin in class, my bad habit of 'nail biting' came out. He inspired me, and it is the result of receiving a lot of feedback.

- I took pictures of myself as if our class was photography, but it was very awkward at first. However, soon I got used to it, and it turned out to be a really good photo. Also, since I had learned about B&W in the previous class, I was wondering if I could use it for my poster as well.

- The meaning behind my poster is that many people bite their nails when they are mentally broken. This season is the Covid 19 season, and there will be many people who are mentally broken because of this. I implicitly compared the two and thought they were similar. 'Bite' was substituted for the mental. So the sentence that came out is ‘Do not bite your mental’.
